Tim Cook
photo: Twitter
Technology - A Apple CEO, Tim Cook has publicly discussed his sexuality for the first time in a column in Bloomberg Business week, saying he is 'Proud to be gay." Though he has 'tried to maintain a basic level of privacy, "he wrote, he has since some to realize that this" desire for personal privacy has been holding me back from doing something more important."

For Cook, the decision to come out publicly reflects his desire to build a better future: "If hearing the CEO of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to everyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it's worth the trade-off with my own privacy."

"I am proud to be gay," the 53 years old CEO writes, "and I consider and that many pf his colleagues already knew he was gay. "It does not seem to make a difference in the way they treat me," said him. Even before coming out, Cook was a passionate champion of LGBTQ rights. On Monday, he slammed his come state of Alabama over its reluctance to embrace gender and sexuality.

When this is the first time that Cook has publicly discussed his sexuality, it has long been an open secret in the tech world that the head of the industry's most scrutinized and revered company was gay. This spring, Out magazine ranked him number 13 on its Power 50 list. In June, a CNBC anchor accidentally outed Cook, saying, "I think Cook is fairly open about the fact that he is gay at the head of Apple, isn't he?"

Cook finished his essay by recounting how, when he arrives at his office each morning, he is 'greeted by framed photos of Dr. King and Roberts F. Kennedy. I do not pretend that writing this puts me in their league. All it does is allow me to look at those pictures and know that I am doing my part, however small, to help another."

"We pave the sunlit path toward justice together, brick by brick," wrote Cook. "This is my brick."

Facebook Tells the DEA to Stop Making Fake Accounts

fake accounts

Technology - Facebook is fighting back after learning that the DEA created a face account using the information of a woman whose cellphone had been seized (that information included provocative photos from her phone, as well as photos of some of her family members).

The agency was using this account to interact with suspected criminals. While the woman, named Sondra Arquiett, had at one point been arrested as a suspect in a drug ring, she was put on probation instead of serving time. Later she learned her likeness was being used on a Facebook page that was not her own (in fact, she did not even have an account) and that information and photos from her seized phone were used to create the profile.

Arquiett is sueing the DEA and the specific agent who created the profile with the information. The Justice Department says the case is being reviewed, but Facebook is speaking out asking that the DEA "cease all activities on Facebook that involve the impersonation of others."

In a letter, Facebook says the DEA's actions undermine its community and purpose, and that it has suspended the account in question. The social network also says it has taken all necessary steps to prevent further unauthorized use of Facebook by the DEA and its agents.

Facebook's real name policy is a driving force behind the site; the site strictly enforces its users to go by their real names and provide true information in their profiles. This isn't the first time in recent weeks that Facebook has found itself having to respond to issues with this policy.

Facebook has been removing the names of drag queens and other LGBTQ users who gave adopted new names and in some cases, discovered their gender identities were not what they were when they originally joined Facebook.

It's a complicated issue, wherein Facebook is attempted to stay true to its real name clause but also, now, seems to be realizing that this isn't a black and white issue and that some room for exception must be allowed.

However, in the case DEA agents allegedly stealing a woman's identity and photos, there is no gray area. When the agency defends its actions as used for law enforcement purposes, it will have to answer for its actions in court per Arquiett's lawsuit-and possibly to the Justice Department. which is reviewing the case.

This chip has the ability TrueNorth like information processing in real-world environments such as recognizing a voice or a face in the crowd moving.

How does it recognize the chip like way the human brain function with billions neurons connected with thousands of other people and processing information in parallel. IBM chip is composed of one millions neurons and 256 million synapses of neurons that convey digital signals.

"Our long-term end goal is to build a 'brain in a box' with 100 billions synapses which consumes 1 kilowatt of power," said Dharmendra Modha, a chief scientist on the team that developed this chis, as reported by IB Times, monday (11/8/2014).

he added, in the near future, we will look at some ways to empower smartphones. mobile devices and cloud services with this technology. Amazing

Microsoft Focusing Intensively on Windows 9

photo: itsfoss.com

Technology - Microsoft, which is seemingly working on bringing the much anticipated Windows 9 to its users across the world by Spring 2015, has now officially announced 'end of support' date for Windows 8 for business users across the world.

According to a ZDNet report, business users will need to switch form using Windows 8.1 OS, to using Windows 8.1 update 1, by 12 August 2014. Incidentally, 12 August is Microsoft's 'Patch Tuesday', and the company is slated to release a slew of updates on the day, including the potentially useful 'out-of-date ActiveX control blocker' that prevents outdated ActiveX control blocking is applicable to Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 users, with IE versions 8 through 11 covered.

Microsoft's Windows 8.1 Update was released by the company in April 2014, and Microsoft had initially set a 13 May deadline for business users to switch to the upgrade, owing to users pressure. Now, with the Redmond-based company having set a 12 August deadline, users (business) need to switch form Windows 8.1 OS to Windows 8.1  Update, and users on Windows Server 2012 R2 nee to obtain Microsoft 's Windows Server 2012 R2 Update.

'End of support' signifies that post a particular date (set by Microsoft), users of products that the company considers legacy, won't be eligible to receive security fixes and patches from Microsoft. Not keeping a particular system up-to-date with latest security fixes could naturally open up possibilities of hacking and cyber-crimes, within that system.

Based on the ZDNet report, Microsoft's 12 August 'Windows 8.1 Update' deadline, is also applicable to business users having Windows 8.1 Embedded Industry OS on their systems. However, Microsoft's Patch Tuesday deadline is not applicable for general users, and those running Windows 8 and 8.1 from within their computers at home.

It is interesting to note that Microsoft may or may not release the Windows 8.1 update 2 on Patch Tuesday. Speculations indicate that, even if the update is released, it would be only minor fixes and performance enhancements.  Earlier in the year 2015, Microsoft had announced that Windows 7 would reach the 'End of Mainstream' support phase starting from January 2015.

Apparently, Hackers Stole a Car Easier than User Data Hacked

Technology - The car is equipped with a remote locking system (remote locking) can be hacked with custom applications 'off-the-shelf' for 600 pounds, or about USD 11.8 million. According to a computer expert, the software is very effective to penetrate the security of keyless entry. Silvio Cesare, who works at security company Qualys, plans to give evidnce at the Black Hat Security conference in Las Vegas this week about how he managed to unlock the car yourself using these techniques.

By using a software-defined radio, allowing the computer to send receive various frequencies that are used all the devices from Wi-Fi wireless remote key and a Bluetooth device. In fact, it could happen in a car that uses a rolling code system, which is commonly used to improve security by changing the required message when opening the car door every time it is used.

"If someone is parked in the garage in the long term, something like this could happen," said Cesare told Wired.

This sure provide the opportunity  for hackers to perform an action when the owner of the car using the key wireless remote, at least in the one-time use code to extract a unique description which transmits commands to lock or unlock the car door.

However, Cesare was only tested the technique on his car (have not tried it on a car owned by someone else). Moreover, this technique hasn't been tested for the engine powering the car so that if this incident really happened, the car owner will only lose items in the car.

In a way, this technique is a bit easier than stealing the data on the laptop or other gadget. In fact, the information obtained can be used widely by hackers, so Cesare pledged to secrecy. "Criminals can hire researchers to replicate this attack. But they won't get it from me," he said.
