Sad, 4 College Softball Players Killed and 11 Others are Injured in Oklahoma Crash

Sports - Four college softball players were killed and 11 others were injured on Friday night in Oklahoma after the bus they were riding in collided with a semitrailer truck. The crash took place shortly after 9 p.m, while the truck crossed a median entered oncoming traffic on Interstate 35 near the city of Ardmore, about halfway among Oklahoma City and Dallas, and it hit the bus carrying students from North Central Texas College, the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety said.

An initial investigation by the authorities showed "strong evidence that inattention by the semi driver a role in the crash," said Captain George Brown, a spokesman for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. But no one was immediately charged in the crash, he said.

The softball coach, Van Hedrick, who was driving the bus carrying 15 players from the team called the Lady Lions as they returned from a game, was also taken to a hospital fro treatment and later released. Eight students were treated as hospitals and released, when three others were listed in stable condition at two hospitals on Saturday.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it was sending a team to investigate the crash. Photos from the scene showed a heavily damaged white bus, with one side missing and the inside visible. North Central Texas College has five campuses in the suburbs of Dallas and Fort Worth, with more that 9,000 students. The softball team had a game on Friday at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Oklahoma.
